It makes an attempt to have a multi-stage initialization (small initramfs to disk to *) to reduce the size of the initramfs ramdisk.

The installer boots from 2 floppies: The first is the boot-disk, which holds a small kernel and initramfs. The second disk holds additional modules that lets it install to a HDD. The second floppy is only required if you want to install the OS onto a HDD.
When booted from the first floppy, use "install" to run the installer. You will be asked to insert the second floppy, and later, the first floppy again.
Only IDE (ATA/PATA) controllers supported by the ata_generic module will work.
